Mariota Bowl (Jags-Titans) Preview

Phil Simms sounded like he was genuinely looking forward to calling tonight’s game when he promoted it on last week’s broadcast, so he’s either a great liar, he’s stupid, or he just has a really positive and weird outlook on life. I’m not a big fan of Simms as a broadcaster (@philsimmsquotes is a great twitter follow), so I would lean towards option b, but maybe he’s just that weird. Anyway, that was a long and unnecessary way of getting to the game Simms was so excited about (gulp): Jaguars-Titans. I called it the Mariota Bowl in the title because both teams are 2-12 and among the very worst teams in the league, but that label is probably not true; the Buccaneers actually have the best chance at getting the #1 pick, as they hold tiebreakers over the other 2-12 teams so will “win” the top pick if they lose out. Actually, I wouldn’t mind that, because I’d rather see Mariota on the Bucs than on the Titans or Jets or Redskins. It wouldn’t be as fun as if he were on the Eagles (fellow Eagles fans: would you trade LeSean McCoy, Nick Foles, and a first rounder for Mariota? It seems like a steep price, but I would seriously consider it. Running backs aren’t that valuable in today’s NFL, and a Chris Polk-Darren Sproles combo would still be among the best in the league. Losing a first rounder- probably a cornerback- would be rough, but it would be worth even the chance that Mariota is a franchise QB), but the Bucs are a good fit because they actually have some talent on both sides of the ball.

I’ve avoided talking about this game, but I can’t avoid picking a winner, so here goes:

Tennessee Titans (2-12, 3-10-1) at Jacksonville Jaguars (2-12, 4-9-1):
Spread: Jaguars favored by 4.5
Over/under: 39
My prediction: The Jaguars haven’t been favored all season, but they also haven’t played the team playing worse than any other team in the league at home this season. They lost 16-14 in Tennessee back in October in a game they should have won, and the big difference between they and the Titans is that the Jags are still actually trying. Jaguars win 20-13.

Week 15 review coming in a little bit. Just wanted to publish this before the game starts.
