3 MLB Teams With the Most to Prove

There are three teams that have a lot to prove this season. As Spring Training winds down, there is a certain level of optimism among all Major League clubs. I feel there are 3 teams in particular that need to make strides this season. If not they will be seen as a major setback.

1. Washington Nationals- The Nats have come along way since their dismal first few seasons. Those terrible seasons helped them draft both Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper. These two are the cornerstones of their franchise and they hold the keys to the Nationals success. Last season was not the way they wanted to finish. After finishing 2012 with the best record in the Majors, they failed to make the playoffs in 2013. Several key players including Bryce Harper suffered injuries derailing the Nationals chances for a playoff run. Strasburg has all the tools to contend for a Cy Young award every season but he has never been able to crack 200 innings yet in his young career. If the Nationals allow him to break the 200 inning season barring injury Strasburg is poised for a special year. They have a solid starting rotation including newcomer Doug Fister and talented closer Rafael Soriano. The Nationals should win the NL East. The Braves will give them a challenge but with Atlanta’s tough spring with injuries to their starting rotation a hot start by the Nats could hold of Atlanta and make it easier for them to capture the NL East crown for the second time in 3 years. If the Nationals fail to make the playoffs, there will be some harsh questions to answer.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers- It’s safe to say at this point the Dodgers have the scariest lineup in the Majors. They also have the best pitcher in baseball as well. Outside of the Diamondbacks, LA will have no problem winning the NL West. It’s not a question of if they make the playoffs but how far can they go? An NLCS birth last year ended in defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals. In order for the Dodgers to feign disappointment they must make the World Series. There is no excuse for them not to make it. Although the St Louis Cardinals are still arguably the best team in the National League the Dodgers need to make it to the end to legitimize their huge payroll and moniker Yankees West.

3. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim- Honestly has their been a more disappointing team in the Majors the last few seasons? Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton have been less than their usual selves since coming over to the Angels. As age starts to creep up on these two its time for them to hit the fountain of youth and get this team over the hump. The Angels pitching staff is a roller coaster. The starting rotation has some good young arms but they are still learning how to be consistent. Led by Jared Weaver and Cj Wilson, the rest of the top 5 must have good seasons for the Angels to make noise in the AL West. An AL West Division that is already loaded. The A’s are still the consensus favorites to repeat as Champs, but don’t count out the re-tooled Seattle Mariners and the always dangerous Texas Rangers. For the Angels lets start with a winning season and then we can talk about playoffs, but the window for them to make noise is closing as Weaver, Hamilton and Pujols all get older.
