It was thought the Americans did not have enough fire power to contend for the gold in Sochi. Those sentiments should be put to bed after the USA crushed Slovakia 7-1 on Thursday in the opening game of the Men’s Hockey Tournament at the 2014 Sochi Games.

It took a while for Team USA to gel as they only scored one goal in the first period. Then the Slovakians tied the game a mere 24 seconds into the second and it looked like the Americans were in for a dog fight. Just over a minute after that Ryan Kesler, on an Assist from Patrick Kane, buried the game winning goal. The Americans were not done by a long shot. Five more goals followed giving Team USA an explosive 6 goal second period. The Americans had six different goal scorers with Paul Stastny scoring two. After the fifth goal of the period, Slovak goalie Jaroslav Halak was chased for backup Peter Budaj. American goalie Jonathan Quick had a solid 22 saves for his first Olympics start. The next test for the Americans comes against Russia on Saturday, which should be a great game and the atmosphere will be electric.
