Tanaka Update

Currently, highly touted Japanese Ace Masahairo Tanaka is in the United States meeting potential suitors and taking physicals. In my opinion it is down to two teams: The Yankees and the Dodgers.

Los Angeles Dodgers: There is one big issue with the Dodger scenario. When are they resigning Clayton Kershaw?  On January 15th,  Kershaw filed for arbitration, and it would appear that contract talks are back on for the reigning NL Cy Young Winner. Paying Kershaw should be the top priority of the Dodgers. A talent such as his does not come around often, and Kershaw is still young. If they take a chance and pay Tanaka and it does not pan out they could potentially not have Clayton Kershaw to fall back on. On the other hand, the Dodgers have deep pockets and it would not surprise me in the least to see them sign the highly touted prospect as well as give Kershaw a long contract extension.

New York Yankees: I believe Tanaka will play in Pinstripes this season. The Yankees can and will match and beat any offer any other team can come up with to bring Tanaka to New York. A-Rod’s impending suspension frees up a ton of money, and clearing Robinson Cano’s contract off the books gives New York a huge chunk of money to spend. It makes more sense for the Yankees to sign Tanaka then it does for the Dodgers in terms of roster makeup. With an aging starting rotation and the last days of Jeter on the horizon, the Yankees need to find a new face and Masahairo Tanaka can fill that void.
