Ravens UPSET Broncos, Packers-49ers on right now

I knew there would be an upset in the AFC. With no first round upsets, one of the double digit favorites was bound to lose (perhaps both?) That first huge upset came at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens, who just beat the heavily home-favorite #1 seed Denver Broncos. It was a strange game in a lot of ways.
Consider:

  • Trindon Holliday of the Denver Broncos set a playoff record with a punt return AND a kick return for a touchdown. Those two returns totaled 194 yards. What makes this shocking is that, coming into the game, the Ravens had the best special teams unit in the NFL (and one of the top 10 best in the last 20 years, according to footballoutsiders.) The Broncos outgained the Ravens on special teams kick+punt returns by a 261-86 yard margin, although Broncos kicker Matt Prater ended up missing a 52 yard field goal, his only attempt of the game, while Ravens rookie kicker Justin Tucker hit the game winner.
  • Peyton Manning threw two bad interceptions, including a controversial pick 6. The other pick led to the game winning points.
  • Ravens WR Torrey Smith beat Broncos top cornerback Champ Bailey, long considered one of the top CB’s in the NFL, for two long touchdowns
  • Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman had 25 touches, 10 more than his next most. He had only 36 in the six games prior. Starting RB Knowshon Moreno had 12 touches.
  • Manning averaged only 6.74 yards per attempt, down from an average of 8 over the regular season.
  • Joe Flacco outplayed Peyton Manning, and not by a slim margin

Packers-49ers, which I consider the best game over this weekend, is on now, and it’s living up to expectations (14-14, five minutes into the second half)
